प्रगतिवादी विचारकों के लिए ‘पुरोहितशाही’ शब्द घिसापिटा शब्द है, जिसका उपयोग कोई भी सकारात्मक तरीके से नहीं करता है।इसीलिए उस शब्द का परिचय फिर से कराने की जरूरत नहीं है। ‘पुरोहित’ अनेकार्थी शब्द है। जैसे भगवान और मनुष्य के बीच का मध्यवर्ती, धर्म का ठेकेदार, आदि। उसके साथ ‘शाही’ शब्द जुड़ गया है, अतः ‘पुरोहितशाही’ का अर्थ है धर्म के ठेकेदारों का शासन। प्रगतिवादियों का दावा है कि यही ब्राह्मण पुरोहित प्राचीनकाल से धर्म की ठेकेदारी करते हुए भगवान के नाम पर जाति व्यवस्था, अन्धविश्वास, अनैतिकता, छुआछूत पद्धति आदि अनिष्ठों को पैदाकर उसका पोषण करते आये हैं।
‘पुरोहितशाही’ कहकर दावा करने वालों का ब्राह्मणों के प्रति लोक-ज्ञान (Popular perception) कुछ इस प्रकार है। इनके अनुसार कपट प्रवचन, लोभ, स्वार्थ आदि ब्राह्मणों के लक्षण हैं। इन्होंने दूसरों को वेद-विद्या से वंचित किया है। ब्राह्मण लोग बहुत मतलबी हैं। अपने अनुकूल विधि बनाकर कानून द्वारा सभी का शोषण करने में वे मशहूर हैं। लोक-ज्ञान का परामर्श किये बिना ब्राह्मणों की अवहेलना की जाती है। जबकि ब्राह्मण कितना भी अच्छा क्यों न हो, पर किसी ब्राह्मण के साथ व्यवहार करते समय उपरोक्त लोक-ज्ञान का अनुभव न होते हुए भी ब्राह्मणों का चित्रण उपरोक्त रीति से ही हो जाता है। ब्राह्मणों का चित्रण हमारे साहित्य में या किसी आत्मकथाओं में इसके अलावा अन्य रीति से हो ही नहीं सकता।
परन्तु यह कितना सत्य है? क्या इसका कोई वास्तविक व निजी आधार है? यदि यह सच होगा तो आगे जो हम बताने जा रहे हैं वह हमारे समाज में होना ही चाहिए। जैसे की ब्राह्मण जाति के सभी लोग पुरोहित होना, जो गैर-ब्राह्मण हैं वे कभी भी पुरोहित व पुजारी नहीं बन सकते हैं। कहने का मतलब यह है कि सभी लोगों के देवकार्य ब्राह्मणों द्वारा ही होना अथवा केवल ब्राह्मणों के मार्गदर्शन में ही होना है। गैर-ब्राह्मणों का पुजारी बनना कदाचित सम्भव नहीं है। हर ब्राह्मण में उपरोक्त दुर्गुण होना अनिवार्य है। इतना ही नहीं अन्य लोगों के ऊपर ब्राह्मणों का शासन सदैव रहा हो। परन्तु पूरे भारत में ऐसा एक समाज भी नहीं मिलेगा जो ब्राह्मणों के शासन के अधीन हो। हाल में नहीं भारतीय इतिहास में भी इस प्रकार का समाज नहीं था।
हमारे समाज में ब्राह्मण जाति के सभी लोग पुरोहित नहीं हैं। ब्राह्मणों में ही पौरोहित्य करने वालों का एक प्रभेद जरूर है। वे लोग देवकार्य, अपरकर्म, जनेऊ, चूडाकर्म, आदि संस्कारों को मंत्रोक्त विधि-विधानों से कराते हैं। उनका शिष्यवर्ग भी रहता है। प्रायः वे लोग ब्राह्मण ही होते हैं। ब्राह्मण लोग उन्हीं के घर में पौरोहित्य करते हैं जो उनके शिष्यवर्ग के अन्तर्गत आते हैं। गैर-ब्राह्मणों के घर में कभी किसी व्रत, पूजा, विवाह आदि मंत्रोक्त आचरण करवाने के लिए बुलाने पर जाते हैं। परन्तु ऐसा सभी समय और जगह पर प्रचलित नहीं है। इसके अलावा आगमोक्त पूजा के कार्य होने वाले मन्दिरों में अर्चक के रूप में ब्राह्मणों की ही नियुक्ति करने की प्रथा थी। (जिनको मंत्र और पूजा विधान की जानकारी हो) ताकि मंत्रोक्त रीति से पूजा-पाठ सम्पन्न हो। परन्तु आधुनिक काल में खासकर शहरों में सभी जाति के लोगों की माँग बढ़ने के कारण ब्राह्मण वृत्ति एक मुनाफे की वृत्ति बन गयी। पुराने जमाने में ऐसा नहीं रहा होगा। क्योंकि हमारी कथाओं व पुराणों में आने वाले ब्राह्मण गरीब बेचारा ही रहा करता था।
ब्राह्मणों के घर में शास्त्र सम्प्रदायों, धार्मिक विधि-विधानों को सुचारू रूप से महिलाएँ ही अपने मार्गदर्शन में करवाती हैं। (पुरोहितों के घर में भी) गैर-ब्राह्मणों में अधिकतर सभी धार्मिक आचरण उनके अपने जाति के मुखिया, जोगय्या, दासय्या आदि उनके अपने लोगों के मार्गदर्शन में ही होते हैं। घर के बुजुर्ग लोग जैसे दादा-दादी, नाना-नानी आदि के मार्गदर्शन में भी घर के धार्मिक कार्य होते रहते हैं। हरेक जाति के बीच के खास सम्प्रदाय उनके अपने लोगों के बीच निर्धारित होते हैं। ब्राह्मणों के अलावा अन्य जाति के लोगों का भी उनका अपना मन्दिर और धार्मिक-मठ होते हैं। वहाँ उनके अपने पुजारी होते हैं तथा उनके अपने खास सम्प्रदाय का आचरण हुआ करता है। कहने का मतलब यह है कि केवल ब्राह्मण लोग मात्र पौरोहित्य नहीं करते। ब्राह्मण लोग अपने घर के अलावा अन्य सभी जाति के धार्मिक आचरण निर्देश नहीं करते हैं। अन्य जातियों के रीति-रिवाज पर ब्राह्मणों का कोई अधिकार भी नहीं रहता है। उनका कोई नियन्त्रण भी नहीं रहता है। अन्य जाति के लोगों के बुलाने पर वहाँ जाकर धार्मिक आचरण करवाते हैं। अन्य कुशल कर्मियों की तरह ब्राह्मण भी हैं। पौरोहित्य उनकी एक जीविका है। (जो पौरोहित्य करते हैं) कोई एकाध लोग उसका दुरुपयोग किये होंगे; पर पूरे ब्राह्मण जाति की अवहेलना सही नहीं है।
हमारे समाज में ‘पुरोहितशाही’ है ऐसा कहने वाले लोग किस आधार पर कहते हैं। ऐसा कहने वालों का कहना यह है कि सभी जाति के लोग ब्राह्मणों को उच्च जाति का कहते हैं। ब्राह्मण अपने घर के अन्दर दूसरों को आने नहीं देते, साथ में भोजन करना नहीं चाहते, अन्य जाति वालों के साथ विवाह सम्बन्ध नहीं करते हैं। अन्य जाति के लोगों का उन्हें बहुवचन से पुकारना, परन्तु ब्राह्मण जाति के बच्चों का अन्य जाति के लोगों को नाम लेकर पुकारना आदि। उपरोक्त आधार को लेकर पूरे ब्राह्मण जाति के लोग सभी जाति पर शासन करते हैं यह कहना कहाँ तक ठीक है? ध्यान देने की बात यह है कि यह सब ब्राह्मणों पर गढ़ी हुई कहानी है। इन कहानियों के मूल को ढूंढने के लिए उपनिवेश पूर्व युग को लौटना पडेगा।
भारतीय समाज के प्रति इस प्रकार पूर्व-नियोजित रीति से कल्पना करने के पीछे बुनियादी तौर पर दो विषय हैं। एक रोमन कैथोलिक चर्च तथा दूसरा उसके विरुद्ध का प्रोटेस्टैंट आन्दोलन । क्रिश्चियन चर्चों में प्रीस्टहुड नामक एक हैसियत है। उनके प्रीस्ट जो हैं वह मनुष्य और भगवान के बीच सेतु बनकर मध्यवर्ती के रूप में उनके अपने रिलिजन के आचरणों को करता रहता है। ऐसे करना उसकी जिम्मेदारी है। ऐसा करने का अधिकार उसे चर्च की व्यवस्था देती है। उनका पवित्र ग्रन्थ यह भी ठस्सा मारता है कि ‘यह एक क्रिश्चियन को मिलने वाला परमोच्च अधिकार है।’ चर्च एक व्यवस्था है जो सभी क्रिश्चियन पर समान रीति से लागू होता है। इसीलिए प्रीस्ट के अधिकार के अन्दर सहज ही सभी लोग आ जाते हैं। कैथोलिक चर्च में इस व्यवस्था का पालन कट्टर रीति से हुआ करता था। चर्च के बाहर किसी प्रकार के रिलिजियस आचरण सम्भव नहीं थे ऐसी सम्भावना दूर की बात है। 16वीं सदी में पहली बार प्रोटेस्टैंटों का जो आक्रमण हुआ, वह आक्रमण इसी प्रीस्टहुड के विरुद्ध था। मार्टिन लूथर के नेतृत्व में यह जनान्दोलन हुआ था। तब नयी ‘टेस्टामेंट’ के भागों को आधार बनाकर प्रीस्टहुड का पुनःनिरूपण किया गया था। उसके अनुसार सभी प्रीस्ट क्रिश्चियन ही हुआ करते थे। लूथर ने कैथोलिकों की कड़ी आलोचना की थी। उसका कहना यह था कि ‘कैथोलिकों ने पवित्र ग्रन्थ के विरुद्ध प्रीस्टहुड को एक संस्था के रूप में आगे बढ़ाने के कारण वह एक शोषण का साधन बना। कैथोलिक प्रीस्टों ने क्रिश्चियनों का विभाजन कर उनमें भेद-भाव पैदा किया। पवित्र ग्रन्थों को आम लोगों से दूर रखकर लोगों को धोखा दिया। उन्हीं के कारण पेगन आचरण और मूर्तिपूजा प्रचलन में आयी, जिसमें झूठे रिलिजन को प्राथमिकता मिली।’ इसीलिए उपरोक्त मुद्दों को दूर भगाना ही उनके आन्दोलन का मुख्य उद्देश्य था। जब पश्चिम के लोग भारतीय संस्कृति के बारे में लिखना शुरू किये तब उपरोक्त यही दो अंश पहले ही उनके दिमाग में बैठे थे, वह उनका अपना अनुभव था। उन्होंने अपने अनुभव के ज्ञान से भारत को पहचानने का प्रयास किया। भारत में उन्हें ‘हिन्दूइज्म’ और ‘बुद्धिइज्म’ नामक रिलिजन दिखाई दिये। उनको ऐसा लगा कि यहाँ रिलिजन है, तो सहज ही उसकी अन्य संस्थाएँ भी होना स्वाभाविक है। जब वे इस पूर्वगृहित के साथ भारतीय संस्कृति को देखने-परखने लगे तो क्रिश्चियन रिलिजन के प्रीस्टहुड के स्थान पर यहाँ के ब्राह्मणों को बिठा दिया। सवाल उठा कि हिन्दू रिलिजन का पवित्र ग्रन्थ कौन-सा है? उत्तर आया ‘वेद’। वेदों का अध्ययन करने वाले केवल ब्राह्मण ही हैं। ब्राह्मण उनके मन्त्रों के आधार से पूजा-पाठ करवाते हैं। इन सभी संगतियों को जुटाते समय यह ध्यान नहीं आया कि यहाँ चर्च जैसी कोई व्यवस्था है या नहीं। क्रिश्यियानिटी चश्मा पहनने के कारण उन्हें यह दिखाई ही नहीं दिया।
भारतीय संस्कृति के सम्बन्ध में उनके अभिप्राय को और भी मजबूत करने के लिए यह एक और मजबूत मुद्दा था। उन्हें लगा कि कैथोलिक रिलिजन कालान्तर में जैसे भ्रष्ट हुआ वैसे ही ‘हिन्दूइज्म’ भी भ्रष्ट हुआ। साथ ही उनका तर्क यह था कि ब्राह्मणों और कैथोलिक प्रीस्ट के बीच कोई अन्तर नहीं है। इसीलिए यहाँ भी ब्राह्मणों की वजह से ही हिन्दूइज्म भ्रष्ट हो चुका है। वे मान गये कि ब्राह्मण लोगों ने अपनी श्रेष्ठता को बनाये रखने के लिए गैर-ब्राह्मणों को वेद के ज्ञान से वंचित रखा था। इसी सन्दर्भ में पुरुषसूक्त और मनुस्मृति का अनुवाद भी हुआ। उन्हें प्रमाण मिला कि ब्राह्मणों ने अपनी श्रेष्ठता को बनाये रखने के लिए वर्णाश्रम व्यवस्था की स्थापना की है।
भारत में जाति व्यवस्था को पैदा करने वाले ब्राह्मण ही हैं, ऐसे कहने वाली किंवदंतियाँ पैदा हो गयी। इस मनगढ़ंत कहानी के पीछे यही गृहीतकों का हाथ हैं। मजे की बात यह है कि ‘पुरोहितशाही’ शब्द हमारे शब्दकोश का शब्द नहीं है। उसकी उपज हमारे संस्कृती के शब्दकोश में नहीं है। वह अंग्रेजी ‘प्रीस्टहुड’ शब्द का पर्यायवाची भी नहीं है। पूरे कैथोलिक चर्च की व्यवस्था और उसके प्रति प्रोटेस्टैंटों की आलोचना जो है उसे ध्यान में रखकर देखने मात्र से पुरोहितशाही शब्द का सही अर्थ हमें मालूम होता है।
